The idea behind Haptic City was born in cyberspace, after a long series of Skype conferences, between Athens-based media artist Afroditi Psarra and at the time Montpellier-based architect/ designer Artemis Papageorgiou. The first real meeting between Afroditi and Artemis, took place on January 2013 at Afroditi’s studio, which became the headquarters for the project.
The idea was to create a collective embroidered map of the city of Athens, by organizing a two day workshop on e-textiles, physical computing, sound making and creative coding.
The project begun by selecting a map of the center of Athens and re-designing it on fabric by abstracting certain areas and focusing on specific details of important sites. The map was drawn on twelve separate pieces of Panama fabric (a cotton grid fabric mostly used in embroidery).
